Empire School District

Problem: Empire is a small school in southwestern Oklahoma. A school representative first contacted me to design a logo for their high school golf team’s polo shirts. This team is co-ed, but initial discussions indicated they wanted gender-specific shirts. I used Adobe Illustrator to create the logo. They requested a simple logo with a high-end end feel. The color palette is red, black, and white-the school colors. These colors provide excellent contrast.

Solution: I initially submitted three designs. One design had a male golfer with a club on his shoulder and leaning on his bag, another a female golfer eyeing her shot, then a golf tee logo. The text underneath had the school name, Empire, framed by two horizontal lines- one above and one below- the word golf underneath. The text used a typical hierarchy, with Empire being larger than golf. The image was balanced. After review of the three logos, elements of the submitted logos were chosen, and then I went to work to design a gender-neutral logo.
